Eventually they formed, and if they had seemed neutral before, this time the question seemed downright accusatory:

“Scanned by whom, Eva?” I asked and looked around for an answer. A flock of birds of all sizes appeared from behind the hills and settled half in the trees, half on the shattered remains of the shuttle, and the stars were disappearing and against an impossibly blue sky a pale yellow sun caught to shine merrily. I stopped only when I realized I was reading from the old children’s Bible.
