I liked that part of the journey best of all, because, all to my lonesome, I was able to think my own thoughts. And I told him. “Not on your life.”
“All right,” I said, reaching for my drawers. “Get in the back of the truck.”
Putting my books down, I did as I was told, waiting while he unlatched the back doors so we could climb up into the body of the truck. His big arms, coming around me, held me close before he shoved me away. But it was my own fault that when Papa got home from the pulpwood, I was still sitting there admiring my brand-new shining quarter, and not a bed made or a floor swept. That’s been more or less my own experience of life, too; but it don’t mean that you’ve got to act the blame fool and bring it on yourself.
